The 4 Things That Can Keep Women From Being Turned On

A woman is free if she has power over her body, her desire, her libido.

As a human, you cannot be aroused 24*7, whether you’re a man or a woman. But understanding libido is a little more complicated in women, not least because of the constant hormonal turmoil menopause could mark a significant change in her libido, for good or for bad. But sometimes, there their body is going through.

For instance, in a woman, periods of menstruation, pregnancy, and are other reasons causing dampened sexual desire in women that may cause acute personal distress, and affect the quality of their lives, and of people around them.

Let’s begin with identifying a low libido symptoms:
  1. Lack of sexual thoughts.
  2. Lack of sexual desire, without an underlying medical or physical cause.
  3. Strained relationships due to the lack of sexual thoughts/desire.
The next step is identifying what may have led to this situation. Sexual drive is known to naturally decline with age, both for men and women. But what we forget is that sexual desire is more than just feeling ‘horny’.

It also consists of interpersonal and psychological factors that determine whether the person has a decreased sexual desire for their partner, or in general. Sexual desire remains a subject that is quite debatable, mostly misunderstood, and commonly avoided. Even though there are several factors that govern desire and libido, here are the most common reasons that could be keeping you from being a tigress in bed:

  1. Interpersonal strain – Performance issue/s with a woman’s partner, lack of emotional satisfaction in the relationship, or overwhelming household responsibilities and the stress resulting from it are natural reasons for a woman to lack sexual desire.
  2. Sociocultural influences – Stress resulting from outside, like stress from jobs; and negative images of sexuality that may cause fear or loss of interest in the sexual act are other reasons why a woman might have a low libido.
  3. Low testosterone – Testosterone is the hormone that governs sexuality in both men and women. In women especially, testosterone levels peak in the 20s, and decline till menopause, post which, there is a dramatic drop – both in testosterone and in desire.
  4. Medications – Antidepressants, high blood pressure medicines, and oral contraceptives are known to lower sexual drive by lowering the available testosterone, or by affecting blood flow (and thus, blood flow to the genitals).
How do you find your desire back? Remember I said that desire is complicated? Well, it is, and that is what makes treatment tricky. Since desire, and therefore, the loss of it, is a combination of physical and several other factors, the treatment also tries to approach the problem from all possible directions.

I will try and keep this short, but to briefly explain – depending on the possible cause, the treatment for low sexual desire may involve:

  1. Counselling for couples with relationship strain, to try and understand the issues that are causing dissatisfaction, and sorting through those.
  2. Changing medications or dosage, to address the low libido.
  3. Addressing any medical condition, such as fibroids, through a possible surgery.
  4. Vaginal oestrogens: In case of women going through menopause, vaginal dryness may be treated with oestrogen creams that are applied to the vagina directly.
  5. Testosterone therapy: Although approval on any drug to treat sexual problems in women is pending, gynaecologists may recommend an off-label testosterone treatment, through pills or hormone injections, to restore testosterone to normal levels and revive libido. However, it comes with its own risks.
