Have you been contemplating a beauty detox for some time? Think no more. Straight from a holistic health coach, here’s how to incorporate little detox sessions through your day, every day!
A few years ago, I was eating a so-called healthy diet, but my skin was still dull with acne, my hair was brittle, and I constantly felt bloated. I couldn’t figure it out. I went to several dermatologists, but nothing was helping, until I implemented these 5 holistic detoxing steps, which literally transformed my otherwise dull skin to glowing and dewy skin in less than a month! My diet was nutrient dense, but I wasn’t absorbing the nourishing qualities because of my poor digestion. When our system is clogged, it prevents us from digesting our food properly, which causes toxins to build up and get reabsorbed in the body. That manifests on our skin as acne, a dull grey pallor, and wrinkles. Ayurveda has solutions that can help detoxify the body, by improving the digestion (agni) and eliminating toxins, whilst nourishing and lubricating it at the same time!
1. Organic ghee –
Ghee is my top ‘beauty’ fat. Its properties are smooth, lubricating, and nurturing. It helps moisturise our skin from the inside-out, and helps make our skin supple and radiant. We should aim to have 2 teaspoons a day. I cook my food in it, and also add it to my grains.

2. Ginger tea –
Beauty comes from the inside out, and that is why ginger’s warming properties help to stimulate the bowels. It breaks up mucus, and speeds up the removal of toxins in the body by improving elimination. This helps the skin to glow. To prepare ginger tea, take 2 inches of ginger, grate it, add these pieces to a cup of boiling water, and let it steep for around 10-15 minutes. Sipping on this tea before having a meal will help you absorb those ‘beauty nutrients’ better.

3. Practice yoga inversions –
All inverted postures help increase blood circulation to the face and head, which can help give us that natural facelift and rosy pinkish glow. These postures include headstands, shoulder stands, and bridges. You can start by holding a posture for 1 minute, and eventually work up to 5 minutes.

4. Practice pranayama (deep-breathing exercises) –
Kapalbhati pranayama (skull-shining breathing technique) is extremely powerful. It helps detoxify the body by clearing your lungs. In this, more oxygen is consumed, while carbon dioxide is thrown out. It helps gives us an instant shine on the skin. You should aim to do this for 10 minutes every day, on an empty stomach.
5. Triphala, the wonder herb –
Triphala is one of the most potent formulas for beauty in traditional ayurvedic medicine. Its ability to cleanse, whilst nourishing the body, makes it a detoxifying staple. It is made of a preparation of 3 fruits – bibhitaki, haritaki, and amla. Each of these have their own healing properties, and when combined, the benefits are further enhanced. It works as a gentle laxative, by stimulating the peristaltic action of the intestines to improve elimination, whilst removing toxins. Amla is also loaded with vitamin C, which helps keep the skin bright, and the hair shiny. You can have 1 teaspoon of triphala powder, mixed with a glass of warm water, before sleeping.
