What is mindfulness?
The Wikipedia definition of mindfulness says, “Mindfulness is the practice of bringing one's attention to the internal and external experiences occurring in the present moment, which can be developed through the practice of meditation.” Sounds simple enough, but in our cluttered world where stress rules, this is almost an art.
Where does breathing fit in?
With a focus on the moment being the key to mindfulness, it becomes imperative to practice breathing meditation, in order to soothe your nerves and bring your heart, mind, and body in sync. It is the first step to complete relaxation.
Find a quiet place – When starting out, the first thing to do is to find a quiet spot, which is perfect for contemplation and meditation. Trying to meditate in a space that is noisy is counterproductive, as it is more difficult to connect with your inner self, at least when you are just starting out.
Clear your mind – The best way to achieve the state of bliss through meditation is by clearing your mind of all the irrelevant clutter, and beginning with the here and now. Think of your mind as a blank slate, and begin the process of meditation by focusing on your breath, rather than the errant thoughts racing through your mind.
Keep your mind and body still, and keep the right posture – It often becomes difficult to bring the physical in sync with the spiritual, especially if you are new to the art of meditation. Try and be consistent, and meditate at the same time every day. Choose a posture that you can hold for a period of time, rather than one that makes you uncomfortable, as you will find yourself focusing on the physical rather than the mind, if you are not completely at ease.
The power of repetition – As you breathe in and out, remember to concentrate on the simple, basic art of breathing. Observe the diaphragm moving in and out as you inhale and exhale, and over a period of time, try drawing your breath out more slowly, becoming one with the process.
