Top 4 Reasons Why You Should Avoid Canned Foods

You know that canned foods are bad because everyone keeps saying it. It’s time you knew why!

It is convenient to put canned food on the table in this day and age of fast-track living. Working couples do not have the time for lengthy preparations. Buying canned food saves preparation time, as well as effort.

But there is a catch here – canned food can be poisonous. This, and other reasons to limit canned foods:

1. Less nutritious

It is common knowledge that fresh food, fruits, and vegetables are more nutritious than preserved fruits and vegetables. The body needs a balanced combination of nutrients, which is normally not available in canned food. In fact, preserved foods are high in salt content, and sometimes sugars as well, which can create a sodium imbalance in the body, along with a host of other issues.

2. Leaking aluminum

Of late, studies have proved that aluminum residue in the human body is hazardous, and leads to memory loss, dementia, and other ailments related to Alzheimer’s disease. Food packed in aluminum cans can contain aluminum, as the metal can leak into the contents. So you can imagine how much aluminum we’d be consuming if canned food is a part of our regular diet!

3. Preservatives

Canned food has preservatives and additives that are toxic compounds. The human body, born from nature, is accustomed to natural products. Laboratory generated compounds are harmful to our system, as the body cannot process or digest these substances. These harmful substances keep accumulating in our system, and can eventually lead to life-threatening ailments.

4. BPA

A toxic substance called BPA, or bisphenol A, is commonly found in canned food. The inner lining of the cans is made of this plastic coating. Traces of this plastic dissolve into the food, and are ingested and absorbed by the body. This is a harmful compound and can lead to hormonal imbalances, which can further lead to hypertension, obesity, cancer, etc.

So think twice the next time you go to buy canned food, and if you don’t have an option, then at least take note of the ingredients listed on the can, and choose wisely.

An MA in Sociology of Health Care from Warwick University, UK, Anjali was interested in reiki healing since a long time. Even her final dissertation was on the acceptance of reiki as a complementary therapy for cure. Coming from a household of doctors and having a spiritual bent of mind (she now understands that the material and the spiritual are just two ends of the same continuum), she tried her hand at reiki, theta, and aura healing, and was smitten! Currently, Anjali is into a modality called Serenity Surrender, which emphasises healing of the self (soul).
